The Project

Recently the body of literature concerning the Balkans is rapidly enlarging. Writings about the Balkan peoples are increasing in number after the world’s attention was drawn by the recent political changes the peninsula undergoes.

The mission of the Balkan Web is to provide systematic, periodic examinations of scholarly advances in the field of literature and cultural studies, as well as to be a meeting place where scholars can exchange information, and find and post materials. At the moment the materials cover mainly 19th-century Ottoman Bulgaria and Turkey-in-Europe.

The site contains a small collection of 19th-century British travel books and maps of the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire, a bibliography list, and online texts contributed by you.

The Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe (the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University) and Sources on the Balkan Peninsula listed the Blakan Web as a source.
